Laden is a one of a kind, hand-built figural sculpture realized in porcelain. The raw fragility of the medium, fired without glaze, allows the piece to speak with intensity through its intricate physical form, as well as to evoke a direct connection to its complex interior world. Slowly covered with hundreds of hand-pulled Maoricolpus roseus casts, Laden explores the evolution of the inner self in response to uncontrollable personal, societal, and natural forces. A vessel for the soul, it stands in a future where multiple forms of life collide. Accepting colonization of the body and surrendering autonomy, Laden questions the notion of disability, and carries a complex shared existence not only as a burden, but as a protective cloak full of disparate perceptions, conflicting memories, and common hopes.
