Hand built porcelain sculpture
5.5” tall x 3” diameter
Nigella is a one of a kind, hand-built porcelain vessel. Its direct reference is a spent nigella damascena seed-pod found along a flooded river. The pod’s form is structurally fascinating and deeply engaging: it houses many seeds, and yet when exhausted, it still retains its singular, beautifully articulated, evocative form. Nigella holds the duality of being a carrier of future life- of holding multitudes, and also of being an empty vessel- a hollow shell with only the memory of fecundity. Like my other work, Nigella asks the viewer to imagine an anthropomorphic future, or perhaps a past, where humans and the natural world are bound together physically and inextricably, and where co-existence is complex and beautiful, yet saturated with unnamable loss.
